Import/Export

In the Database area, you can import or export data record types or data.

To do this, open the Import/Export drop-down list in the toolbar.

Data record types

When you export a data record type, you create an XML file. For example, the file can serve as a backup for a new data record type or you can import the file into a second database.

Please note

If you import an existing data record type, the Field title and Length column properties may be overwritten. The Length will only be overwritten if the new value is larger (longer) than the existing value.

When importing a data record type, you have to ensure that abbreviations which are already in use are not used. If this is the case, then the import will be cancelled.

Data

When you import or export data, a wizard will open. When exporting, data records that belong to a particular data record type are written to an external table. When importing, data records from an external table are imported to a data record type.

Unicode files or files with Unicode fields cannot be imported. This is prevented by a limitation of the ODBC driver.

When exporting; you can choose OEM, ANSI, Unicode or UTF8 as the output format. The default is ANSI.

When importing addresses, you can execute a duplicate check with existing addresses in CAS genesisWorld.

The following example will show you how to import addresses.

Import

After importing owner rights will be available for the imported data and user, whose logon you used to import the data.

For example,
a user has many addresses in a folder on the network. Logon to the Management Console as this user and begin importing the addresses. Afterwards, these addresses are stored in CAS genesisWorld and only this user can access these addresses.

The importing user is added automatically as a data record participant.

Export

Rights in CAS genesisWorld are also taken into account when exporting data. When exporting data as the administrator, only the data which has ownership rights and external access rights which have been allocated to the administrator are exported.

In the process, ownership rights and external access rights of the logged-on user for whom the export is made are taken into account.

The participant selection works like a filter, as you can define which data you wish to export.

Inherited rights through group membership are also taken into account.

Import/Export basics

Select the data record type of which you want to export or import data. When importing data, external data is imported for the selected data record type.

The import/export wizard opens. The title line of the window shows you which data you are exporting or importing, for example, addresses, appointments, documents and so on.

The import and/or export with OLEDB can only be made if ADO is installed. You find the version you require in the system requirements at CAS Product Documentation.
